Mmmmm… There’s nothing quite like a warm slice of bread fresh from the oven. Or in this case, a nice flatbread (pita if you prefer).

I have been on a big mini pizza kick lately with my chicken Alfredo and BBQ chicken pizzas. Both of which use flatbread as the crust. Which means we have been burning through the stuff like hotcakes.

I finally caved and decided I should probably attempt to make a batch on my own. This recipe is easy, no-fail, and delicious!

What You Need:

Bread is my nemesis. I can never seem to get it to bake quite right. So I had my doubts about this easy homemade pita bread. Simple is really the best word to describe how easy this is. Mix the ingredients and go. It is no-fail. If I can make it anyone can!

  • All-purpose flour
  • Instant Yeast
  • Sugar
  • Salt
  • Water
  • Oil

I have only used instant yeast for this recipe. If you need to swap that out for active I would suggest letting the bread rise a tad longer.

How To Make Pita Bread

When I say this is the best pita bread recipe I mean it. The instructions could not be any easier. Simply stir, form, and bake!

  1. Combine all of the ingredients into the bowl of an electric mixer. Stir until combined with the paddle attachment.
  2. Switch to a dough hook and knead for five minutes. If kneading by hand increase that time to ten minutes.
  3. Place in a lightly sprayed bowl and cover with a dry clean towel. Let rest for one hour.
  4. Divide your dough into 8 equal pieces.
  5. Roll each piece into an eight inch circle.
  6. Place onto a lined cookie sheet and allow to rest 15 minutes.
  7. While the dough is resting preheat your oven to 500 degrees (not a typo).
  8. Cook on the bottom level of the oven for 5 minutes. Your bread should have puffed up slightly. If not add an additional minute or two.
  9. Transfer to the top rack and cook 2 more minutes.

You will want to keep a close eye on these as they bake to avoid burning.

Tips and FAQs

It is like magic watching these bake. I did not believe that they were going to puff up, but sure enough they did. Every single one of them puffed to a beautiful air pocket of goodness.

It blows my mind how simple the entire process was! If you are a fan of pita or flatbread.

This quick pita bread recipe can be used in substitute with any bread. We use it to make mini pizzas, PB & J, stuffed with tuna salad, or filled with our Italian favorites. The possibilities are endless. Here are a few of our faves:

  • BBQ Chicken Mini Pizzas
  • Chicken Alfredo Pizzas
  • Taco Pizza
  • Italian Chicken Pita
  • Tuna Salad

Are Flatbread and Pita the Same?

According to DifferenceBetween.com, Flatbreadis a flat, thin, bread that is used as a staple food in many cultures.Pitais a soft, slightly leavenedflatbreadthat is used in Mediterranean, Balkan and Middle Eastern cuisine. The key difference betweenpitaandflatbreadis thatflatbreadsare often unleavened whereaspitais slightly leavened.

How Do You Get Pita To Puff

This is actually one of my favorite bits of baking science! Cooking pita at a high intense heat dries the dough on the top and the bottom. While that is happening it’s also causing the moisture in the middle to create a blast of steam. The built up pressure pushes out the pita to create the center.

Can the flour be bread flour, white flour or whole wheat flour? Also, would it be the same measurement for each type of flour?
