I don't think any of them are mediocre. What I'm saying is they are really high value products, really polished, really loved, high selling products, that for some reason make more success than new franchises with the same features. Why? I don't know. It's like Marvel movies. They are the pinnacle of cinema for some years. Why? I don't know either.
Did you look at the state of Marvel lately? And most MCU movies aren't rated as high as these games here anyway, what a weird comparison.

I really hope Metaphor makes it, but it's doubtful.

Don't see it happening this year, but felt the same way last year and was proven wrong. Totally didn't see BG3 coming.

All of them are "great" if I look to them the same way Marvel movies are almost always "great". People love them, and buy them. My point is that great new franchises don't make the cut anymore. I don't know why. I was just doing some speculation.

I don't think that comparison is apt. Marvel movies aren't being considered best in class, these games are. They are not shallow games either, many of them offer tremendous gameplay, brilliantly constructed worlds, great storytelling, a lot of player agency or multiple of those. Are games like Baldur's Gate 3, Tears of the Kingdom and Elden Ring really considered comfort food now in the way The Avengers is a comfort food movie? Also, there are new franchises that made the cut (like Elden Ring and Hades) as well as older ones, like Undertale.
To answer the question: I don't think any 2024 game will crack the top ten but I can seen multiple 2025 games do it. That year could rival last year.

Metaphor and Astro Bot both have a real shot, and of course there might be some utter masterwork quietly approaching that I haven't even considered.

Astro Bot games had great reviews and the next one is certainly their magnum opus. I'm willing to bet this is the next game to break that 95 wall.
You can't possibly dislike that Galaxy feeling.

Nothing they've shown looks better than Rescue Mission, imo

Opencritic wasn't even around when ME2 released. It started tracking reviews from 2014 ish onward.

They are not lying ahah:) Opencritic only counts games from end of 2013 onwards….GTAIV is the big OC mystery of the last 4-5 months. Some user speculated they wanted to include all previous years ala MC, but after those couple of GTAIV reviews nothing:)
